A blood moon is a total lunar eclipse. During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on the Moon. However, some sunlight still reaches the Moon, refracted (bent) through Earth's atmosphere.

This refracted light scatters away the blue wavelengths, leaving the red and orange wavelengths, which then illuminate the Moon, giving it a reddish or coppery appearance. Hence the name "blood moon."

According to NASA, during the overnight hours of March 13th and 14th, much of the Western Hemisphere may be in for a treat. The moon will plunge headfirst into Earth's umbra – the innermost, darkest core of our planet's shadow. What was once a pearly-white orb will transform into a mesmerizing, blood-orange disc.

This is an opportunity you won't want to let slip through your fingers!
